One of the world's top 10 best known wine brands, Guigal is the producer of this incredibly smooth, spicy, soft and delicious full bodied red Cotes du Rhone. At least 4 million bottles of this wine are made in a good year and as it is aged for three years  minimum in Guigal’s wine cellars, there are about 12 million bottles of Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge in Guigal's cellars at any one time, either fermenting or maturing.

All of the grapes are grown and bought in from 850 growers in the Rhone Valley and while this is a vast amount of external input, all of the wine production from fermentation to ageing, bottling and marketing is done by the Guigal family. 

This blend is approximately 55% Syrah with smaller proportions of Grenache and Mourvedre to add roundness to the wine, which is softened out by the three year ageing process in Ampuis, in the Northern Rhone, which is the Guigal family's winemaking headquarters.

Marques de Riscal Reserva is an exceptional Rioja made from old vines, planted pre 1970s. A touch of Graciano and Mazuelo (10%) adds complexity and crisp acidity. This is a medium-full bodied red wine with bright red fruit flavours, integrated oak and a long, juicy finish.

95% Malbec and 5% Merlot from Cahors in the south of France. This is a juicy and concentrated wine with ample fruit flavours. Notes of plums and cherries are supported by subtle spiciness and a distinct minerality. This is a great value wine from a lesser known appellation.

100% Malbec grown on shallow, alluvial, loam and clay-loam soils on sites that are over a 1000 metres above sea level in Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. 

This is all about juicy Argentine Malbec fruit that we all love so much and seems a given from this part of the world. Handpicked grapes are macerated for 10-15 days and then fermented cool prior to ageing in stainless steel and 15% French oak barriques for eight months.

Graciano is one of Spain’s best kept wine secrets - a red grape with thick skins that is a tricky customer to grow, which means there’s precious little of it about, even in the vineyards of the Rioja, where it is one of the traditional ingredients in the wine of the same name.

This is a dark Spanish beauty with soft fruit flavours, medium body and fresh, long finish.

A darker shade of ruby. The nose is of a slightly Mediterranean character, rich in spices, forest fruits and discreet oaky notes. On the palate, dominating fruity characters with some toasty notes, which contribute to the richness of flavours in the wine. This is a wine full of flavours with a long aftertaste. Taste it with pleasure!

Created for immediate enjoyment, our 2022 Zip Line Shiraz captures the essence of the Barossa with its vivid ruby hue and expressive aromatics. Notes of ripe red and black fruits mingle with delicate floral rose hints, delivering a bouquet that’s both vibrant and inviting.

Minimal oak influence ensures the purity of our Shiraz shines through, leading to a palate that is effortlessly lush and fruit-forward. A ripe, finely textured tannin structure provides a soft, lingering mouthfeel – a hallmark of this beautifully balanced 2022 vintage.

Our Zip Line Shiraz is named after the zip line cable ride at our vineyard, which generates endless laughter for all generations of the family – and much like this wine, it’s a smooth ride to the end.

The Wine:

A blend of native varieties from our vineyards located in the Rioja Sonsierra region. The varieties combine to create a clear definition of a young, fresh, and fruity wine.

WINEMAKING:

Process: Carbonic maceration (whole bunch maceration). This allows us to transmit all the fruitiness of the grapes to this wine. Fermented at a controlled temperature (26º). The fermentation process proceeds normally and quickly. Natural stabilization and bottling.

The Producer:

Abeica is winery currently under the watch of the fourth generation - with the fifth already cutting their teeth. Do not for one second though assume that this historic connection bears the weight of conforming to brand Rioja.  During the 1990's the winery was successful at home and abroad. Growing year -on-year, buying in grapes from neighbouring properties to fuel their growth.  The four siblings, Isabel, Ricardo, Pachi and Raul decided to pull back from this and return to a true family project using only their own vines and their combined skills.  Vineyards are mainly clay-calcareous between 450-590 metres and enjoy the protection of the Sonsierra mountain range. Vintage employs the entire extended family to hand pick and bring in the harvest to the gravity-fed winery. Fermentation is generally whole bunch under carbonic maceration. There is a refreshing hands - off approach, letting nature do the work which leads to freshness across the range. It truly feels like Rioja with the light let in.

This wine shows inviting aromas of juicy black fruit, mulberries, plums and hints of warm spice. After spending 18 months in barrel, the palate is soft and juicy with well rounded tannins and a long, delicious finish.

Lively flavours of black cherry, violets, and subtle tobacco notes. Supported by a rich palate combining fruit and oak with black forest and mocha tones. Structured and complex with a long dry finish.

The Rasteau Cru lies in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône region. The vineyards are bathed in morning sun; sheltered by the Dentelles and have a mainly northerly aspect. The soils are dominated by clay and limestone, with cobbles on the surface, which retain heat and create drainage. Wine has been made here since Roman times, and the region is famous for its fortified, sweet Vin Doux Naturels. Dry red wines have been included under the Cru appellation since 2010. Grapes mature more slowly, and the harvest is later than other appellations; the extra time being highly suited to the region's dominant variety of Grenache Noir. 

This wine is a blend of Grenache with a small proportion of aromatic Syrah and Mourvèdre fermented in traditional concrete vats. The wine is matured for 12 months in the same concrete vats before release in the regulation appellation bottle.

Tasting notes

This wine manages to be serious, as you would expect from a Cru Rhône, but with a freshness and precision that really lifts it. All liquorice, garrigue, and spice, wrapped around a vibrant red and black fruit core.

Specially selected by Boutinot's French winemaking team, les Crus du Sud is a handcrafted selection of wines from the Southern Rhône.

Peyrassol Croix Méditerranée Rouge 2022 offers a classic southern French blend, led by Merlot and Grenache with Mediterranean warmth and generosity. Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum and wild herbs are layered with black pepper and dried lavender. Gentle oak use adds hints of cedar, spice and subtle toast, supporting a supple palate with soft tannins and a smooth, savoury finish. A vibrant, easy-drinking Provençal red with balance and charm.

Aromas of rich Black Doris plum, fresh blackberry and Xmas spices, with a hint of sweet French oak. Powerful yet elegant and precise in the mouth showing perfume, spice and dark ripe fruit. The tannins are ripe and chalky and balance beautifully with the intense fruit and spicy seam that runs through the wine. It is vibrant and youthful with an elegant acid backbone that lends itself to wonderful aging potential.

Our grapes were grown on a hillside vineyard with views over the Tukituki river, and old riverbed vineyards, inland of Has-tings. In 2020, we had a very warm, dry and settled season. A warm summer and a dry Autumn produced some stunning Hawke’s Bay wines. The yields were kept low to maximise colour and intensity and come from MS, 470 and Limmer clones of Syrah that each offer a unique expression.

Most of the fruit was completely destemmed into open top tanks and left to sit for up to seven days until it began to fer-ment. We have included a small portion of whole bunch to offer greater structure and increased floral aromatics. We initially pumped over or plunged gently and then with gusto as it fermented. Primary ferment lasted for around eleven days, then the wine was held on skins for up to a total of 25 days. It was pressed and run to the cellar to be aged in French oak barriques through winter before it went through malolactic fermentation in spring. The wine was then rested until blending on the 3rd June 2022, before bottling unfined.
