VITICULTURE
Sourced from old, low-yielding vines from some of the best Hawke's Bay vineyards in the Bridge Pa Triangle and Mangatahi. Machine-harvested early in the morning for freshness. Located on the east coast of the North Island, Hawke's Bay is one of the warmest wine-growing regions in New Zealand. The long and warm growing season provides for excellent ripening conditions and full flavour development.
WINEMAKING
Free-run juice and gentle first pressings only were used in the blend. Barrel fermented in French oak and aged in barrel for 10 months, with a further nine months on lees in tank.
TASTING NOTES
Soft and generous with excellent structure, fresh citrus notes and beautifully balanced with ripe peach, apricot and finely integrated toasty notes. A fresh finish gives a long-detailed ending that keeps giving and giving.
CELLAR POTENTIAL
Enjoy now, or cellar carefully for up to five years.
WINEMAKING NOTES
The fruit for this wine is a blend of Clone 15 (32%), Mendoza (23%), Clone 548 (22%), Clone 95 (21%) and Clone 1066 (2%) grown on the sandy silt soils of the lower terrace of the Askerne vineyard. Hand-picked and whole bunch pressed, the juice was transferred to barrel for fermentation. The barrels were a mixture of both wild and inoculated ferments and 75% of the blend completed malolactic fermentation. The wine was subsequently aged for 10 months with lees stirring to add volume and complexity. The final blend has a 25% new French oak component, and 18% 2nd fill.

The grapes for this wine were sourced from the lower terrace of the Askerne vineyard, across different soil profiles from sandy silt through to gravels, giving wonderful complexity to the individual parcels that make up the blend. Each batch was fermented as individual varieties followed by extended post maceration on skins to build richness. After pressing, the wines were settled and racked to oak barriques. Here they completed malolactic fermentation and were matured for 12 months before blending. The final blend was made up of 76% Carménère, 12% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre and 1% Malbec and with a 40% new oak component, and 40% second fill.

Unit price perLa Grande Dame is one of the great champagnes and is a big, dry, toasty, full bodied wine, made from 90% Pinot Noir, which adds layers of savoury depths to this complex bubbly, and 10% Chardonnay. It is named in homage to the Grands Cru vineyards from which the grapes in this wine come, from Champagne villages Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy and Verzenay and 47% Chardonnay from Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.
Its name also pays homage to the Grande Dame of Champagne, the late widow Clicquot, whose main legacy is to have left both the brand and the region in better condition than she found them, mostly famously by inventing riddling; the turning of the bottle to remove the yeast sediment into its neck, prior to disgorgement. This resulted in higher quality, cleaner, fresher bubbles in both look and taste. Her quest was quality and she is widely credited with having raised it significantly in the Champagne region and in the bottles it produces.
