Four Pillars Spiced Negroni Gin is a highly aromatic, rich and (yes) spicy gin with great power and intensity. First, we took our base botanicals and upped the amount of Tasmanian pepperberry leaf and cinnamon. Then we added an exotic West African spice called Grains of Paradise. This is one of the most unusual spices in the world, with clove and sichuan characters. But although very powerful, the spice tends to glow rather than become hot.

In the 18th Century, the Royal Navy began the practice of storing gin rations below deck alongside gunpowder.

As such it was crucial that, should a barrel burst, the wet gunpowder would still ignite in the heat of battle.

Anything under 57.15% - or "gunpowder proof" - was barred from ships, while any gin stronger was welcomed aboard.

And with that, Navy Strength Gin was born.

From the Winery Argiolas comes this traditional Sardinian Liquer, made by macerating the leaves & berries of the Myrtle plant in alcohol. 

The result is a slightly sweet liqueur with notes of eucalypt juniper & spice & great component in cocktails or by itself!

During his time in Scotland, Charles Edward Stuart would carry with him a mysterious draught, from which he would drink a few drops every day. Nobody knew for certain what this formula was; only that it had been created by the Royal Apothecary. The apothecary would have imbued the drink with protective properties. He must have chosen Cloves - a dried flower bud of an Indonesian tree. This aromatic spice is still used for its powerful analgesic properties. Only the most prized spices would have been used. Many are convinced that saffron was the main ingredient. Not only was it renowned for its medical and sedative properties, but it would also have given the drink its rich golden colour. The secret selection of herbs, spices and Scottish heather honey is then infused by hand into the Scotch whisky base. Salvage yards were walked in search of heritage coloured glass to inspire the evocative deep green colour of the stunning bottle design that houses the new Strange Nature Gin, which was launched in October 2021 by Giesen Wines. 

This gin contains only one botanical, juniper, for which classic traditional gins are best known but it also has another familiar flavour to New Zealanders - Sauvignon Blanc. 

This gin is made from the alcohol removed from Giesen Wines' 0% alcohol Sauvignon Blanc. It is twice distilled and, while it has the hallmark aromatic flavour notes of Sauvignon, this is a classic style of gin with distinctive peppery juniper aromas. 

“The Sauvignon Blanc spirit tastes so extraordinary we didn’t want to disguise it,” says Kyle Skene, distiller and Giesen Group general manager, who spent 18 months trialling and refining Strange Nature Gin, prior to its launch.
